After a short career as a nurse, Ghislaine van Thiel (1968) studied Health Sciences at the University of Maastricht. She specialized in medical ethics. She worked at the Center for Bioethics and Health Law at Utrecht University. Since 2006, she is employed at the Julius Center, where she obtained her PhD in 2009. She is the vice-chair of the Research Ethics Committee at the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital and she teaches medical ethics at the Utrecht University medical school.

Research topics are clinical ethics, research ethics, and methodology of empirical ethics research.
