Guy Rutten appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion
On Friday, March 23, 2018, Prof. Guy Rutten, PhD, said goodbye after having been a professor of primary care diabetology for twenty years.
Following his valedictory speech entitled "Towards optimal diabetes care", he was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion by Utrecht mayor Jan van Zanen.
Dutch College of General Practitioners Standard
Following his medical finals and general practice training at the University of Nijmegen, Guy started as a
primary care physician in a group practice in Beuningen, where he worked until 2014. After obtaining
his PhD, Guy joined the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG), where he published the first Diabetes Mellitus NHG Standard. In early 2017 Guy received his honorary NHG membership for his many years of great merits for the NHG and primary diabetes management.
Diabetes: from science to practice
Guy also worked at the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht from 1995 and became a professor of primary care diabetology in 1998. From 2004 Guy was the head of the Diabetes Management Training department. He has co-authored more than 325 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and has tutored twenty PhD students. In 2010 "Diabetes, from science to practice", of which he was the editor, was published, providing practical advice to professionals based on research carried out under his leadership. He has made key contributions to large-scale international trials, was editor-in-chief of Primary Care Diabetes, was chairman of the European Primary Care Diabetes Study Group and has for years been a member of the scientific advisory body of the Diabetes Fund. Finally, he was chairman of the Diabetes Primary Care Physicians Advisory Group from 1996 to 2017.
Ruut de Melker Award
Besides being knighted, Guy received the Ruut de Melker award on Friday This distinction is awarded to primary care physicians or other medical specialists whose work has contributed to the development of general practice, general practice training or general medical care.
"Guy Rutten is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about general practice and diabetes care in particular. He has spent a great deal of energy and time on the health and quality of life of his patients, particularly patients with diabetes. For years, he has fought selflessly for good-quality diabetes care in primary care. The result is that the quality of diabetes care ranks second in Europe. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Guy Rutten, the standard of diabetes care in the Netherlands is very high."

Until October 2018, Guy will be at the Julius Center for one day a week to tutor his four PhD students.
