Delve into the latest advancements in epidemiology and biostatistics at the upcoming WEON Conference! The conference will take place between 29-30 May, with pre-conferences on May 28th in Hotel Theater Figi, Zeist. Co-hosted by the Julius Center, and the Dutch Epidemiology Society (VvE), this event promises an enriching experience for professionals and enthusiasts alike. Planetary Health is the overarching theme at the WEON 2024 congress, highlighting the intricate link between human health and the environment.

This week (April 7th) it was World Health Day. This day celebrates the foundation of the World Health Organization in 1948, and with it, the foundation of health as a human right. This year’s theme was ‘My health, my right’. The importance of protecting of human rights for all was also a central theme during Utrecht University’s Anniversary Day on March 26th, the Dies Natalis. The Dies celebrates the founding of the University in 1636. This year’s theme was ‘The Future of Democracy’.  The Dies celebration also included a session about ‘Democracy and Health’, organized by Global Health fellows Roel Vermeulen, Joyce Browne and Juliette Mattijsen. The three opening reflections on this topic from Charisma Hehakaya, Alexander Rinnooy Kan and Elbert de Jong were followed by an engaging dialogue with various UU professors generated various insights. At the end of the meeting, the new UGlobe flagship ‘Global Health – leaving no one behind’ was launched, which was realized by UMC Utrecht Global health, UU Life Sciences and other UU initiaitves.

The WHA Student Simulation, initially launched by the Julius Global Health team in November 2022, provided an invaluable educational experience for Medical Humanities Master students delving into the intricacies of global health governance and diplomacy.In November 2023, another edition of the WHA Student Simulation was held. The educational initiative underwent a thematic shift, aligning with the pressing global concern of planetary health. In March 2024, the simulation continued to evolve within the framework of planetary health. Building on the momentum from the previous edition, students delved deeper into the interplay between environmental sustainability and public health, examining innovative approaches to address emerging challenges and promote planetary well-being. Global Health fellow dr. Judith van de Kamp coordinated the event together with Mike van Spaandonk and Tom Buis.
