Yourself cooperation in Utrecht region to innovate healthcare
07 June 2016
Knowledge institutes, municipalities, healthcare providers and the business community in the Utrecht region join forces in the Yourself program. The goal: to achieve innovation in the field of self-management. Self-management is all about knowledge and skills that people, both sick and healthy, use to actively contribute to their own health. To this end, more and more use is made of supportive technology, such as apps that enable people to monitor their health.
Yourself supports innovation in the field of self-management by organizing and facilitating the necessary link between the needs of the inhabitants of Utrecht, innovations in the market and competences of healthcare professionals. All parties involved signed the cooperation agreement on Monday, June 6, 2016. The harbingers of Yourself are HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Utrecht University, the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, the Economic Board Utrecht, U Create, municipality of Utrecht, Raedelijn, One Shoe and Rabobank. Anton Franks, member of the Board of Governors, signed on behalf of HU.
Self-management and eHealth
Profound and unique knowledge of self-management and eHealth (use of IT for healthcare) can be found in the Utrecht region. The region boasts many parties that focus on developing, validating and implementing solutions in this field. With a more streamlined cooperation between those parties innovations can be made more effectively and launched more quickly on the market. The Yourself program is committed to adding two healthy, extra years to the lives of every inhabitant of Utrecht.
The entire province of Utrecht will benefit from this initiative for better health and more self-management for its inhabitants. In addition to this, caregivers who help people manage their health will receive better support. And there are plenty of economic opportunities: The support of the business community in achieving more success and impact will create employment, says a spokesperson of Yourself.
Province of Utrecht
The province of Utrecht co-funds Yourself via the Economic Board Utrecht, in addition to which the parties involved contribute to the required capacity and private parties are invited to invest in Yourself. Pim van den Berg, member of the Provincial Executive, also signed the agreement. He believes that in this initiative one should reason from the point of view of the client and that the barriers between the care institutions should be removed. When it comes to promoting the citizens' ability to manage for themselves, the Utrecht region is sitting on a gold mine, says Van den Berg, because 20 to 25 percent of the working population in this region works in healthcare: “There is more to eHealth and other IT applications in healthcare than just developing apps. Self-help requires the extensive use of images and data.”
The Yourself program will cooperate with other regions in the Netherlands. Medical Delta, for instance, in the South Holland region has implemented several activities centered on self-management of employees: eHealth at work. They aim to apply Yourself to these activities. Another example is the Care Innovation Center West Brabant. Collaboration in organizing certain activities for self-management between hospitals, home care, welfare organizations, municipalities and companies is strong in the West Brabant region.
